Other Creatures
Hawaiʻi is a great place to observe birds, but also other creatures!
Butterflies
There are butterflies in Hawaiʻi, including two endemic ones. Even non-migratory monarch butterflies can be found on the islands year round.
Geckos & Lizards
A number of species are found in Hawaiʻi, but none are native. The isolation of the islands limit reptiles and amphibians except as stowaways or as eggs among introduced plants, pots, etc.
Honu
Honu or green sea turtles are herbivores, eating seagrasses and algae. Today, all green turtle populations are either endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
Mongoose
An invasive species, mongooses were originally introduced to the islands in 1883 by the sugar industry to control rats. They are commonly seen on Hawai’i island, Oʻahu, Maui, and Molokaʻi.
Whale
Between December and May, we are visited by humpback whales. They travel from the Gulf of Alaska to the warm tropical waters of Hawaiʻi to mate and birth their young.
