Lunch time

One of the moments I enjoy capturing most is an adult bird feeding their young. It always gives me hope, knowing that those babies are being cared for and will continue on... especially our endemic birds of Hawaiʻi, challenged by habitat loss, invasive species, and other factors.

I am accustomed to seeing birds that were introduced to Hawaiʻi in my neighborhood and watching adults foraging for seeds, berries, and insects to feed their young.

In August, I was on the trail and spotted a cute, fluffy, juvenile ʻelepaio, an endemic forest bird. This juvenile was capable of flight but quite young. I was quietly watching it through my lens. When this happened:

I am told that this adult is delivering a tetragnathid or long-jawed orbweaver spider.

Spider lunch delivery!

On another note... check out two of my photos in a virtual all media exhibit - Art 4 Animals - hosted by the Red Bluff Gallery in California. The virtual format is very cool, with themed galleries and the show benefits abandoned animals. One of my birds is found in Gallery Room 3 - Images the Judges Highlighted and the second is in Gallery Room 9 - Feathered Friends.
