We had a great 4th of July at Parker Ranch!
I'm not a member of the press, so these images were captured from the seating area, with lots of bars and barriers in the way. That said, it was a blast to capture a few rodeo moments. What stuck me was the ranching community, their relationships, commitment and determination. Parents and children, brothers and sisters, from various ranches, competing together. Obvious care was taken to safeguard animals. There was a distinct and special paniolo culture.
One of the events was unique to Hawai'i - Po’o Wai U. A single rider on horseback ropes a steer by the horns and maneuvers it to a forked stand (amana). The rider dismounts and ties a non-choke knot on the steer's neck to the amana, while the horse, now with no rider, keeps the steer in place. The rider with the fastest time wins. Po’o wai u showcases skill and horsemanship!
