The Brilliance of Now

Updated: Feb 19, 2022

Each year, Kahilu Exhibits presents a juried exhibition of Hawai’i state artists. This year is the 6th annual exhibit and the theme, chosen by juror Mina Elison, is The Brilliance of Now: Artwork as a Reflection of a Moment in Time. The show runs at Kahilu Theatre in Kamuela, Hawaiʻi, January 13 - March 3, with galleries open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-5:00 pm.

I am very excited to have one of my images in this show. It is a photo titled The ʻŌmaʻo, a Moment of Wing Quivering and Sunning. The ʻōmaʻo (also referred to as the Hawaiian thrush), is an endemic species of robin-like bird found only on the island of Hawaiʻi. I was fortunate to capture the image, because these birds typically sit high in the treetops and easily blend in with their unassuming brown-and-gray coloring. However, when the berries are fruiting on the trail, the ʻōmaʻo will come down from the canopy to feast. You know when they are present, due to their unusual bird song. Hear their song and learn more about the ʻōmaʻo with Hawaiʻi Public Radio's Manu Minute.

So if you are on-island or visiting, I invite you to the exhibit. Call or check on scheduled hours and COVID rules during the exhibition: 808.885.6868, kahilutheatre.org/exhibits. I am looking forward to this multi-media show where each piece celebrates and explores a moment in time!
