In the last month I've shipped a number of prints that will grace the walls of homes and offices. It is very motivating for me as an artist knowing that my photographs will bring joy to others. I love the unique ways people connect with art:
One man purchased ʻApapane with Lehua Crown (red honeycreeper). His intention was to send the metal print to a friend in another country, knowing that it would be appreciated. But he just couldn't bring himself to ship it. He said that each time he looked at it he saw something new. He reached out and purchased a second copy so he could mail one and keep the other.
A family purchased several metal prints and multiple sets of photo coasters, with several households receiving some of each. When they were strategizing how to hang their metal prints, they started looking at the coasters in the same way as the prints - as art worthy of a position on the wall. They loved their photo coasters so much that they couldn't imagine putting a wet glass on them. They did something I hadn't thought of - they framed the coasters. Ingenious!
While visiting the Island of Hawaiʻi, a woman from a neighbor island saw my Nēnē ʻOhana (the Hawaiian Goose) at the statewide photography exhibit in Hilo. When she was back at work on Oʻahu, she realized that there was a perfect place in her office for that print. The exhibit just ended and that print will wing its way to her office wall, to be enjoyed by her office ʻohana.
I love how people interact with art, in such personal ways. I love how they have their own creative process when they imagine art on their walls and in their lives. I am also honored to be a small part of that process.
